Extend the Table to Its Original Size

Some tables may have removable leaves that alter their size after use.

If your table may have this system, decide the preferred size for your purposes.

If you need to use the tablecloth regularly, consider the size of the table that you use for normal purposes. 

But if you want a formal tablecloth for an entertaining quest, consider the extended size of your table. 

Despite this, if you desire one size table cloth for all purposes, measure the table to its maximum size and add around 6 inches for hanging over the edge.

However, the tablecloth may seem uneven after shrinking. 

Measure the Table Length and Width

Measure the table using tape along the longest side of the table.

For oval shape table, Instead of measuring the outer edges, measure in the center of the table and note it.  Measure the table’s horizontal dimension at the right angle. 

Determine the Drop

The extra length of the tablecloth that hangs below the surface is drop length. typically dining room tablecloth requires around 6 to 12 inches drop.

But if you need a more formal look or have unattractive table legs, reach the tablecloth to the ground. 

To determine the preferred drop length, hold a piece of cloth downward from the edge of the table. 

Calculate the Tablecloth

A general rule of thumb is that multiply the drop length by two and adds the result to the length of the table and the width of the table to get the actual tablecloth size.

Rectangular Tablecloth 

Considering the same drop length:

Tablecloth length = table length + drop * 2

Tablecloth width = table width + drop * 2

Square Tablecloth

You can apply the same formula as the rectangular tablecloth to determine the tablecloth of the square table.

More excitingly, it needs to measure for only one side as all four sides are the same.

Side = table side + drop * 2

Round Tablecloth

To determine the tablecloth for a round table, add drop length with the diameter of the table

Tablecloth diameter = table diameter + drop * 2

Oval Tablecloth

The formula is the same as a rectangular tablecloth

Tablecloth length = table length + drop * 2

Tablecloth width = table width + drop * 2

Booth tablecloth

The booth table is usually placed next to the wall. So you have to consider drop length for one of the longest sides and two other wide sides.

You may also need to fix the tablecloth to avoid the cloth slipping off the table.

Length = table length + drop

Width = table width + drop * 2

Conference or Wedding Tablecloth

If you need to décor a wedding or conference room table, consider drop length for one side and let the three other sides hang.

Length = table length + table height * 2

Tablecloth Runner

The runner-type tablecloth is usually placed in the middle of the table for both decorating and protecting the table from damage.

Many people like to keep the runner tablecloth hanging over the table. But if you want to keep the tablecloth middle of the table, go for the custom option. 

Length = table length + drop * 2

• Consider a slightly larger tablecloth

If your required exact size isn’t available, go for a bit larger tablecloth.

The same advice applies to people who aren’t interested in buying or making custom tablecloths. 

Though a slightly larger tablecloth hangs lower, it’s still better than smaller ones that may not cover the whole table.

Even considering the fabric type, some tablecloths may shrink up to four inches due to washing. 

In this case, a larger tablecloth will turn into an appropriate size. Alternatively, you can choose a rectangular runner cloth as it runs across the middle of the table instead of covering the whole width. Read the next section to learn briefly. 

• Pairing Tablecloth with a Table Runner

A table runner is a piece of dining linen it highlights the table’s center. you can either place it alone on the table or on the tablecloth’s top.

Though you can choose any preferable size of the table runner, the runner should be smaller than the tablecloth.

In addition, it is recommended to choose a runner length that is 1 foot shorter than the tablecloth’s length so it can fit perfectly. 

But if you want to use a table runner mostly on a bare table, you can consider a 6-inch drop on both sides. 

If you have a too-wide rectangular table, put two runners side by side on the table or underneath the setting on both sides of the table.

For decorating your round table, place two runners in an X pattern across the table’s center.

Alternatively, you can place a square fabric on the table and then place the runner on top.
